May Day Strike

Pedal People was closed Monday, May 1st, 2017.

We closed on May Day 2017 in support of national strikes to demand dignity, respect and permanent protection for immigrant workers. Approximately 11 million people in this country are at risk of arrest and deportation by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). We respect the human right to migrate and we resist legitimized discrimination based on someone's legal status, or where they were born.

The strikes are supported by unions and human rights groups across the country. Workers will use their economic power, through strikes and boycotts, to show how critical undocumented workers are to this country. We recognize, too, that immigrants contribute much more to our society than their labor.

We encourage any other businesses to strike on May Day as well. Social researchers say that when 3.5% of the population is committed to a struggle for social change, the change happens. 3.5% of the US population is about 11 million. However, since many undocumented workers can't risk striking, those workers who can take the risk are encouraged to do so in solidarity.

Here is a 2-min video of a worker, Lingeng, who describes why he is choosing to strike:

Thank you for supporting us.

Sincerely,
